Wegovy® (semaglutide)

Intended Use:
Wegovy® (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medication used for chronic weight management in adults with:

  • A body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m² (obesity), or
  • A BMI ≥27 kg/m² (overweight) with at least one weight-related comorbid condition (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia).
    It should be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Contraindications:
Do not use Wegovy® if:

  • You or any family member has ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
  • You have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • You are allergic to semaglutide or any of the product’s components

Warnings & Serious Risks:

  • Thyroid tumors, including cancer: In animal studies, semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. Human relevance is unknown.
  • Pancreatitis: Seek immediate care if you experience persistent severe abdominal pain.
  • Gallbladder disease: Symptoms may include upper abdominal pain, jaundice, or clay-colored stools.
  • Kidney problems: Dehydration from gastrointestinal side effects can worsen kidney function.
  • Hypoglycemia: Particularly when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
  • Diabetic retinopathy complications: Monitor for vision changes.
  • Suicidal ideation or behavioral changes: Report any new or worsening mood symptoms to your provider.
  • Severe gastrointestinal disease: Not recommended in patients with severe GI disorders.

    • Medications with narrow therapeutic windows (e.g., warfarin)

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding:

  • Wegovy® is not recommended during pregnancy. Discontinue at least 2 months prior to planned conception.
  • Unknown if semaglutide is excreted in breast milk. Discuss potential risks and alternatives with your provider if breastfeeding.

Administration:
Inject subcutaneously once weekly in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Administer on the same day each week, with or without food. Rotate injection sites weekly.

Storage:
Store in the refrigerator (36°F to 46°F / 2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze. Can be stored at room temperature (up to 86°F / 30°C) for up to 28 days.

Emergency Situations:
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience signs of severe allergic reaction, severe GI symptoms, or symptoms of low blood sugar. For life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.
