The Calorie Deficit Calculator is only an estimate of the reduction of calories required to lose weight based upon factors including age, assigned sex, activity level, weight, height, and weight loss goal. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (Mifflin et al., 1990), which is recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Dietetic Association as the most accurate formula for estimating resting metabolic rate in healthy adults.

 

The Calorie Deficit Calculator may not accurately reflect the health or wellness needs of individuals of a specific race/ethnic group, those with high muscle mass, pregnant or lactating women, children, the elderly, or those with specific health conditions such as metabolic disorders, thyroid conditions, or eating disorders. This calculator should not be used as a sole diagnostic tool.

 

Calculations are based on established activity multipliers and the principle that a 500-calorie daily deficit results in approximately 1 lb of weight loss per week, and a 1,000-calorie deficit results in approximately 2 lbs per week (American Heart Association guidelines). The calculator enforces minimum calorie thresholds of 1,200 calories/day for females and 1,500 calories/day for males, as recommended by the National Institutes of Health to ensure adequate nutrition.
